Founded in 1987, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA) is an autonomous institution and a centre for research. The Arts’ encompass a wide range of subjects – from archaeology and anthropology to the visual and performing arts.

IGNCA has six departments: the library Kala Nidhi; Kala Kosa, a study centre for publication of texts in Indian languages; Janapada Sampada, engaged in lifestyle studies; Kaladarsana, an art space for exhibitions; Cultural Informatics Lab, which applies technology tools for cultural preservation; and Sutradhara, the administrative section.
