Sean Kelly Gallery was founded in 1991 but it operated privately until 1995 when it opened its doors on Mercer Street. In 2001, Sean Kelly moved into a converted 7,000 square-foot industrial space on 29th Street in the Chelsea gallery district. In 2012, the gallery also opened a new 22,000 square foot space in an historic 1914 building.
Many of the artists represented by Sean Kelly have participated at the Venice Biennale representing their countries: Joseph Kosuth at the Hungarian Pavilion in 1993, Julião Sarmento at the Portuguese Pavilion in 1997 and Marina Abramovic who won the Golden Lion Award for Sculpture in 1997.
