The Giuseppe Whitaker Foundation, under the patronage of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, was established in 1975, with the aim of promoting cultural activities in Sicily, with particular reference to the study of the Phoenician-Punic civilisation, and to the preservation of its historical heritage artistic on the island of Mozia and at Villa Malfitano.

Villa Malfitano, located in Palermo, covers about 8 hectares and consists of a building and a park. The late nineteenth century building contains, among other things, a collection of 16th century Flemish tapestries, a pair of cloisonné enamelled elephants from the imperial palace in Beijing, an eighteenth-century harpsichord recently restored also in the pictorial part, a late Russian sledge eighteenth-century collections of porcelains, fans, corals from the 1600s and 1700s, paintings from the Sicilian 800 and a rare Venetian mirror from 6-700.
