Contacts & Details
Kunsthalle Zürich is one of the most influential contemporary art institutes on the international scene. Since the foundation of the association Verein Kunsthalle Zürich in 1985, Kunsthalle Zürich has been a centre for cultural exploration at the very highest level.
Having operated in a series of different venues in its early years, the Kunsthalle has been based in the Löwenbräu art complex since 1996.
Twenty-five years after the foundation of the Verein Kunsthalle Zürich, Kunsthalle Zürich in 2012 has done a decisive step in its history: the acquisition of permanent premises in the Löwenbräu art complex by the foundation Stiftung Kunsthalle Zürich, and the renovation and extension of the building by the renowned architectural practices Gigon / Guyer and atelier WW.
Kunsthalle Zürich’s deliberate policy is not to keep a permanent collection: “by doing so its identity can be constantly redefined by artistic practice and enable art to explore the societal role of an art institute. The importance of an institute of this nature lies in the fact that it can constantly reinvent itself – and, moreover, through a very specific form of cooperation with the artists, their approaches and methods” (Beatrix Ruf, former Director of Kunsthalle Zürich)
