Aliwal Urban Art Festival 2016

Aliwal Arts Centre

16 Jan 201616 Jan 2016

Aliwal Urban Art Festival (#AliwalUAF2016) is an annual celebration of Singapore featuring a carefully-curated selection of art inspired by international street culture – from graffiti to graphic art, rock to afro-beat to skateboarding.

The highlight of the third edition of #AliwalUAF2016 gets a boost in the form of a contemporary art exhibition with an urban edge. Cannot be Bo(a)rdered features 16 artists from Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia using the skateboard as a medium to create new artworks that respond to the physical form of the skateboard and challenge existing social connotations of youth rebellion characterised by skateboard culture.

Curated by Iman Ismail, artists featured will include Speak Cryptic (Singapore), Nizam Rahmat (Malaysia) as well as the curator of the internationally-renowned art festival ArtJog in Yogyakarta Indonesia, Bambang Toko (Indonesia).

Through #AliwalUAF2016, Aliwal Arts Centre will bring Aliwal Street and its vicinity alive with the help of its arts tenants and programme partners.

The Aliwal Street carpark will be closed off exclusively for this Festival. Transformed into a skate park, skaters will show off their chops in The Asphalt Challenge, a skate competition created by Skate SG. Creative collective, Sideshow, will convert the daily humdrum in the carpark into a groovy performing space with emerging musical talents from the realm of hip hop and electronic music. Expect lion city rappers, producers and DJs to bring an authentic party to Aliwal Street! Centre tenant, the Singapore Music Society or SGMuso, has also selected a line-up of Singapore bands such as Ska/punk band, Cesspit, who will set the Multi-Purpose Hall on fire.

For the first time, audiences can also expect to take home a piece of Aliwal from #AliwalUAF2016 with the following two workshops:

– Renowned DJ, Producer and Dubspot alumni, Koflow, will present an exclusive two-hour music production workshop. Aspiring producers can try their hand at using music software to create and perform beats as well as remix tracks.

– In a workshop by a mystery group of self-proclaimed social misfits, audiences can look forward to creating their own zines. Zines are self-published, small circulation magazines containing topics too niche or controversial for the mass media, typically produced with photocopiers.

Zines are a classic example of DIY urban art.
