Biennale Arte 2001 – Plateau of Humankind

S. Marco, 1364

Biennale Arte 2001 – Plateau of Humankind – curator Harald Szeemann opens on Thursday, June 16th 2016 at Ca’ Giustinian, Venice, the headquarters of La Biennale di Venezia. This is an exhibition of ASAC’s collections (Historical Archives of Contemporary Arts) organised by La Biennale di Venezia chaired by Paolo Baratta.

The display revives the 49th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia titled Plateau of Humankind and curated by Harald Szeemann, the great Swiss curator who died over 10 years ago.

“Let us travel back to the 2001 International Art Exhibition to revisit Harald Szeeman’s second Biennale, as a culmination of last year’s re-examination of his first Biennale, which he curated in 1999.

The foremost innovation in 2001, in terms of the Exhibition’s structure and spatial setup, was the completion of the renovation of those pavilions in the Arsenale located closer to the Giardino delle Vergini.

Following the first Exhibition, titled dAPERTutto (APERTO over ALL), Szeeman named his 2001 Biennale Platea dell’Umanità – Pleateau of Humankind – Plateau der Menschheit – Plateau de l’Humanité: this was in several languages to highlight the different meanings that the word “plateau” takes on in each of them”.
“Through such effort – Baratta says – the Biennale Historical Archives once again pursue their threefold mission: firstly, to better organise the material collected year after year; secondly, to provide scholars with an increasingly more efficient tool for their research; thirdly, to give the Biennale itself a chance to analyse and retrospectively survey the turning points in its life and activities.

One of the main purposes of these small retrospectives is to compile “updated catalogues” of the Exhibitions, comprising the images of works actually featured at each Biennale, even the ones which were not published in the official catalogues.

This endeavour –the President concludes- confirms our wish to make the Historical Archives a vital resource of our Institution”.

Biennale Arte 2001 – Plateau of Humankind – curator Harald Szeemann is a reproduction of the 2001 Exhibition, allowing visitors to once again walk through Szeeman’s exhibit in Ca’ Giustinian’s Portego thanks to original documentation and videos from ASAC.

This initiative joins the programme of temporary exhibitions of documents from ASAC, designed to bring fragments of the history of La Biennale di Venezia back to life.
