Le Dictateur N.5

Base Milano

09 Apr 201609 Apr 2016

A special issue, Le Dictateur N.5, organized by Maurizio Cattelan and Myriam Ben Salah and a big party to celebrate the 10 years of the creation of Le Dictateur, the publishing project founded in 2006 by Federico Pepe and Pierpaolo Ferrari, which since its debut has involved the full and constant participation of Maurizio Cattelan.
The event takes place on April 9th at 7 PM at BASE Milano, the new integrated project for culture and creativity in Milan, opening on March, 30th. Belvedere Vodka has confirmed its partnership with Le Dictateur, accompanying the night with its now iconic cocktail Belvedere Shibuya.
The event to present the new issue is produced in collaboration with h+, whereas the tables of the installation are especially designed by Leftover.

This is an opportunity to retrace Le Dictateur’s story in a festive atmosphere, together with many of the people who were involved in the last 10 years, great artists on the national and international stage but also many emerging personalities. A completely unusual community, based on a purely “dictateurial” logic of total freedom, which was able to start off an ideal place to create and experiment, mix the most diverse artistic vanguards, pushing the boundaries among art, publishing industry, music and design.

The first four issues of Le Dictateur came to life from there and were all edited by Federico Pepe and Pierpaolo Ferrari. In 2006 the publishing project N.1 was designed, challenging the very concept of an artist’s book and upending the two-dimensional norms of paper.
Alberto Garutti, Paola Pivi, Paola Manfrin, Jacopo Benassi were included among the participants. The following issue involved personalities like Patrick Tuttofuoco, Roger Ballen, Micol Assaël, Roberto Cuoghi and many more. Maurizio Cattelan was always present in both issues. Since the third issue their partnership has become even stronger. Le Dictateur N.3 was actually a special issue published on the occasion of No Soul for Sale at Tate Modern, organized by
Maurizio Cattelan, Cecilia Alemani and Massimiliano Gioni. Once again big artists like Sophie Calle, Diego Perrone, Nico Vascellari and a very special contribution by Alda Merini, with her latest poem dedicated to art. It was then the turn of issue N.4, published on the occasion of Un Homme juste est quand même un Homme mort at Palais de Tokyo in Paris.

On April, 9th the book by Azalea Seratoni, Le Dictateur (2006- 2016), will be available for consultation and preview to know and take a deeper look into the ten-year story of Le Dictateur. And here is Le Dictateur N.5, to celebrate its tenth birthday, a special issue in which Federico Pepe and Pierpaolo Ferrari have entrusted the curatorship to two distinguished personalities like Maurizio Cattelan and Myriam Ben Salah, with the objective of creating an ideal visual community, an imaginative “gang”.

Probably doomed to fail, due to its lack of rules, hierarchy, order – or concept for that matter – Le Dictateur N.5 is expressly and brazenly as personal and subjective as possible and reflects the obsessive mannerism of its authors. It is a purely arbitrary work, created to celebrate a decade of dictatorship started among the pages of Le Dictateur.
