A viagem das Carrancas

[The Journey of the Carrancas] presents 40 carrancas (a type of figurehead attached to river craft) from private and public collections, and 42 photos by Marcel Gautherot (1910, Paris – 1996, Rio de Janeiro), belonging to the collection of the Instituto Moreira Salles, other than sculptures in small dimensions, a model boat, and several documents.

Amidst the highlights of the show is the figurehead of the legendary Minas Gerais, the largest vessel to ever sail the waters of the river São Francisco, sculpted by Afrânio, the first known sculptor of carrancas, from the late 19th century. Visitors will also see in the show the figure sculpted for the Americana boat in 1907 by Francisco Biquiba Dy Lafuente Guarany (1882-1985), the most renowned sculptor of carrancas in the country. Other works by the artist are featured in the show, including six “never sailed” pieces, that is, custom-made for collectors between the 1950s and 60s.

Gautherot’s photos [published in the magazines O Cruzeiro (1947), Sombra (1951) and Módulo (1955), and in the book Brésil (1950)] drew attention at the time due to their aesthetical quality and their unique theme. The publication of these images and the following discovery of the carrancas started a new phase for Brazilian folk art. For curator Lorenzo Mammì, “to approach this subject today requires the development of new critical instruments to evaluate this kind of production”.

The show is accompanied by a book edited by the Instituto do Imaginário do Povo Brasileiro, Editora Martins Fontes, and Instituto Moreira Salles, broadly illustrated with images of the carrancas and with the photographic series by Marcel Gautherot, other than records by Hans Gunter Flieg (b. 1923, Chemnitz, Germany), Pierre Verger (1902, Paris – 1996, Salvador), and by the researcher Paulo Pardal. The publication includes essays by the curator, and by Samuel Titan Jr., IMS’ executive cultural coordinator.

The exhibition is presented by the Instituto do Imaginário do Povo Brasileiro alongside Instituto Moreira Salles and the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, which has already received the show.
