Adriano Costa: Storytellingcaipira

In his first solo show at Supportico Lopez, the Brazilian artist Adriano Costa presents “Storytellingcaipira”.
The word Caipira in Portuguese designates the inhabitants, as well as the dialects and cultural manifestations in general of the rural areas in the states of Sao Paulo, far away from the metropolis where the artist resides.
On one hand the stories that Costa tells within his art, avoid the carefully pre-designed and conceptualization of the artwork, by resolving the narrative of the objects through formal construction tools. On the other hand, Costa tries to push the boundaries of narration by reflecting on storytelling practices spun by marketing businesses; based on lies, deceptions, and on the old practice of barkers. This dichotomy can directly be seen in his use of industrial materials beside perishable ones.

Adriano Costa’s method is impulsive and rhythmic. Through his use of popular iconography, he lets the advertising strategies melded into these symbols open the door to connect to his audience. He refers to a common understanding of the art system, by using different elements of this Costa seems to reflect on the uncertain positioning of the work of art and asserts that either as a decorative object or as the subject of financial speculation, the final destination of the artwork is an essential part of it.
