Distortions, Áron Kútvölgyi-Szabó

Áron Kútvölgyi-Szabó’s long time interest in human mindsets and personal worldviews as foundations of one’s thinking is now focuses on the mechanisms of biases and distortions. After the recent solo exhibition Ignorances at Labor Gallery, where the doubtfulness of knowledge were examined through the feasibility of decoding processes and the credibility of reconstructions based on fragments, Áron Kútvölgyi-Szabó is now dealing with the primary elements of doubts: perception and the sensory informations, seeking for the possibilities of certainty.

Through physical and digital simulations and the use of various materials and methods – as metaphors on an abstract level – he emphasizes the ambiguity of perspective views and the limited nature of imaging spatial situations. In all of these isolated instances accidental phenomena and effects can rise and deceive our perceptions, leading to false conclusions and misunderstandings – just like in our everyday life.

One of the core element of the works is the grid system which he considers as a form of filter and a framework in a way it shapes both our mental structures and our living environment we build around ourselves. The regularity of grids makes it easy to see any kind of distortions or errors, but it tends to create various kinds of optical illusions and cognitive interferences on their own. This makes it one of the most practical and in the same time the least reliable examining tool.

In the fall 2016 Áron Kútvölgyi-Szabó created a solo show about this topic in Plusmínusnula Gallery, Žilina (SK) with title In between grids. From those works some were selected for this current exhibition, with a slightly shifted focus and adapted to space of the Chimera-Project Gallery.
