Forrest Bess

Modern Art hosts the first solo exhibition of paintings by artist Forrest Bess in the United Kingdom. In particular, it includes nineteen of the “visionary” paintings for which Bess is mainly known, alongside pieces from the 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, rarely displayed before. Bess’ practice draw inspiration from his personal dreams and internal conflicts, regarding themes related with sex, gender, and sexuality. Inspired by eclectic sources, the artist’s idea was to recreate a new and unique human shape, which would unify the male and female sexes within a biologically male body. This idea was expressed through his visual works and also in a performative act.
