Gertrudes Altschul: Uma Mulher Moderna – Fotografias

The show comprises 27 photographs by Gertrudes Altschul (b. 1904 – d. 1962), one of the few female members in the early decades of Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante, an important Brazilian photo club. With vintage pieces and a new print edition, it’s possible to recognize in the formalism of urban views and in experiences with photomontages, the influences of the Escola Paulista de Fotografia.

For Isabel Amado, curator of the show, “the female presence in Brazilian photography from the post-war period still needs research, and Gertrudes Altschul participation in Foto Cine Clube Bandeirante in the 1950s represents an exception, considering her research has a profound aesthetical rigor”.
