Hildebrando de Castro: Arquitetura da Luz

For his second solo show at Galeria Oscar Cruz, Hildebrando de Castro (b. 1957, Olinda) presents new paintings and reliefs, sophisticated works where his constant preoccupation with light becomes apparent.

The new series comes from a follow up on his research about the incidence of light in architecture. The artist presents façades and inside views of famous modernist buildings from all over the world, like Le Corbusier Unité d’Habitation, in Berlin, or Niemeyer’s São Paulo Biennial building, among others.

Influenced by photorealism, both the figurative representation as the amplitude of chromatic variations are key traits of Hildebrando de Castro’s production. Despite their realistic character, his compositions flirt with geometric abstraction, op art and kinetic art, a transformation that is made possible by the features of the modernist constructions he takes as theme.
