Hilma af Klint: Paintings for the Future

Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, 1071 5th Avenue (at 89th Street)

The Guggenheim hosts Hilma af Klint’s first major solo exhibition in the United States. Paintings for the Future offers an in-depth insight into Klint’s overlooked artistic achievements. The exhibition focuses on the initial years , 1906–20, when she first began painting, initiating a reevaluation of modernism.

The predecessor to Vasily Kandinsky, Kazimir Malevich, Piet Mondrian, the artist started creating abstract paintings in 1906 but kept her groundbreaking paintings largely private. Convinced the world was not yet ready to understand her work, she insisted that it not be shown for twenty years after her death. Her work remained largely unseen until 1986.
