João Modé: O Passado Vem de Frente numa Brisa

The installation O Passado Vem de Frente numa Brisa [The Past Comes From Ahead On A Breeze], by artist João Modé (b. 1961, Resende, Brazil), is part of Museu do Açude’s Space for Installation Program – Temporary Projects, which brings environment and contemporary art together.

Modé’s work, that will suffer the effects of erosion by rain, sun and wind during the exhibition period, proposes a relation with the location’s history and its natural cycles. At the forest, the artist unites threes and bushes with chains made of clay, deepening the visitor’s sense of perspective. He also used the same material to build walls along the path, delimitating fields in space.

The house that now host the Museu do Açude was Castro Maya’s space for leisure and aesthetical fruition. The photos of his personal files, as many oral statements, hold several records of his enthusiasm for walking and horseback riding on the same trails now occupied by Mode’s installation, which brings us closer to ancient habits and times, symbolically reducing the distance between what was then and what is now.
