José Ángel Toirac: Waiting for the Right Time

Pan American Art Projects, 274 NE 67th Street, Little River

The monographic exhibition summarises the work by the Cuban “political artist” – as he defines himself – Jose Ángel Toirac (1966).
Housed at Pan American Projects, Miami, Jose A. Toirac: Waiting For The Right Time presents pieces censored by the political authorities, highlighting Toirac’s negotiation of truth as an integral part of his process of creation.
Toirac’s research digs into the past of his native country, comparing historical facts with present situations. His main interest lies in the process of manipulation of history undertaken by the official authorities of Cuba, whose recent past has been rewritten by hiding information or creating false pieces of evidence to facts.
Questioning how collective memory is constructed, Toirac’s work aims to revise these episodes and introduce them in a new light.
