Kerry James Marshall: History of Painting

David Zwirner – London, 24 Grafton St, London W1S 4EZ, UK

The exhibition features a new body of works by Kerry James Marshall. His ongoing artistic research deals with the history of figurative painting, reinterpreting its language in a new and contemporary context. In this constant confrontation, the artist seeks at the same time to deal with the social conventions concerning beauty, taste, and power and with the recurring invisibility of black figures in the official painting tradition.

For this exhibition, Marshall has widened his focus to investigate the medium in its totality, exploring both the multiple ways that paintings are created, exhibited, and circulated, and the relationship that final viewers have established with it during the years.
