Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili

Ketuta Alexi-Meskhishvili’s works stand at the confluence of digital and analog photography.
The images Alexi-Meskhishvili creates are either straight snapshots or staged photographs that are altered by hand, with digital means, or a mix of both. Her subject matter includes her friends, found objects set up in the studio, found images she reworks, and reflections or shadows of her own body, indicating an auctorial presence. Intimacy and the ‘close-up’ are very particular to Alexi-Meskhishvili’s works. Her subjective point of view overlaps with our own, engaging the viewer in the interaction she forms with her subjects. Even when abstraction prevails, traces of reality are always woven into the fabric of her works. The images begin, but never aim to complete a narrative – like disorienting, fleeting thoughts that make suggestions but do not linger. These traces are physical and metaphorical impressions: fingerprints on a negative, pale reflections of the sky on the glossy surface of a photograph, or a face emerging through bright flashes of color. Alexi-Meskhishvili’s photographs allude to the possibility of a space behind the flat surface – an interiority oversaturated with images, which could also be our own.
