Kugimiya Yui: Naked Table

Galeria Enrique Guerrero presents Naked Table, a solo exhibition by Yui Kugimiya. This will be the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery. For this exhibition Ms. Kugimiya has created new paintings, which vary in scales and shapes. These paintings contain elements of drawing and abstraction, and colors are full, solid, transparent, and charged with energy and tension, while some areas are left without paint. As the painted areas compose the unpainted surface into shapes and lines, paintings suggest moments of inversion in which the unpainted areas as negative turned to appear positive or the other way around. “Naked Table” as the title of the exhibition is a metaphor from Ms. Kugimiya’s process to experiment the idea of presence and nothingness for this group of new paintings.

Yui Kugimiya (1981, Tokyo), studied art at Yale University in New Haven, CT and Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, MA. She has participated in multiple collective shows and has done a variety of solo shows in Mexico, New York and Japan. Her work is diverse in dimensions as she previously worked with video and stop motion animation with painting and now with paint on canvas. Her work can be found in collections at MOMA NY, Everson Museum of Art, NY, as well as in important private collections.
