The exhibition consists of a series of eight site-specific sculptures, conceived by the artist as a project for the neighbourhood of Harlem; the process of production, in fact, actively involved the participants of Studio Museum’s different volunteer programmes.
“Monuments”, on view in the Marcus Garvey Park, includes objects made of branches which reproduce the shapes of natural elements in the park.
Harlem-based multidisciplinary artist Maren Hassinger resumes here a tradition started in some earlier works of hers, such as “Wreath” (1979). Her practice spans a wide range of media, such as performance, installation, sculpture and video, often addressing a reflection on nature and community.
