Maria Pinińska-Bereś: Living Pink

Hosted at The approach gallery, London, “Living Pink” is the first major solo show by the Polish artist Maria Pinińska-Bereś (1931-1999) outside her home country. The exhibition features pieces mainly created during the 80s. This decade saw the introduction in Poland of the oppressive Martial Law by the communist regime. Pinińska-Bereś’ practice defied the authoritarian and patriarchal system with joyful and colourful pieces, often dealing with feminist issues and exploring the erotic. The colour pink, recurring in her works, expresses her attitude towards art and her protest against the system.

“Living pink” takes its title from the namesake performance which the artist enacted in 1981 at the Bunkier Sztuki contemporary art gallery in Krakow.
