The exhibition “Memorias de la Ira. Arte y Violencia en la Colección de Arte Contemporáneo del Museo de Arte de Lima-MALI (Memories of Anger. Art and Violence in the Contemporary Art Collection of Art Museum of Lima- MALI)” groups 17 works from the art collection of Lima-MALI Art Museum, which aim to develop a multi-sided narrative about the period of violence and corruption faced by Peru between 1980 and 2000. In these decades, the country found itself to face one of the most violent chapter of its history, due to an internal armed conflict which, according with the official propaganda, had its main perpetrator in the Partido Comunista del Perú-Sendero Luminoso (PCP-SL). The government’s response to group’s violent actions against the population was mainly military, further aggravating the situation, which led to thousands of victims and systematic violations of human rights.

The pieces on view, under current curator of contemporary art at MALI Sharon Lerner’s proposal, broaden the perspective on these events, raising questions about the role of ideologies in the construction of collective imaginary and national identity.
