Mobile M+: Moving Images

Presented by M+, the new museum for visual culture in Hong Kong, Mobile M+: Moving Images is the first glimpse of the museum’s moving image collection, its inaugural film programme and is part of its ongoing pre-opening public series Mobile M+. Curated by Yung Ma, Associate Curator of Moving Images at M+, the multi-site project features a two-part exhibition which includes a diverse range of works by 24 Hong Kong and international artists, filmmakers and collectives.

Inspired by the themes of migration, and more specifically the multiple connotations of the word ‘moving’ and the rise of diasporic cinema internationally, Mobile M+: Moving Images uses Hong Kong’s ‘migratory cinema’ from the 80s and 90s, and in particular Clara Law’s 1996 film Floating Life, as a starting point to reflect upon how conditions of contemporary migration and displacement are expressed, imagined and represented.

Taking on an expansive view to explore the broader experience in relation to the ideas of border, movement, mobility, transformation and transition, the exhibition includes works by CAMP (India), Paul Chan (USA), Chen Chieh-jen (Taiwan), David Diao (USA), Estudio Teddy Cruz (USA), Simryn Gill (Singapore), Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster (France), Isaac Julien (UK), Kan Xuan (China), William Kentridge (South Africa), Hassan Khan (Egypt), Firenze Lai (Hong Kong), Li Ran (China), Charles Lim (Singapore), Anson Mak (Hong Kong), Ellen Pau (Hong Kong), Koki Tanaka (Japan), Wang Gongxin (China), Apichatpong Weerasethakul and Chai Siris (Thailand), Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries (Korea), Yuan Goang-ming (Taiwan), Zhang Peili (China) and Zhu Jia (China). The exhibition also features a specially commissioned work, The Other Side by the Hong Kong animator Wong Ping, and is being staged in two sites in Hong Kong — Midtown POP in the district of Causeway Bay and in Kowloon’s Cattle Depot Artist Village.

Accompanying the exhibition is a screening programme, of over 30 narrative features, documentaries and artist films ongoing until 19 April 2015 at Hong Kong’s Broadway Cinematheque. The screenings include films by Nick Broomfield, Cao Fei, Allen Fong, Ann Hui, Jia Zhangke, Stanley Kwan, Stan Lai, Clara Law, Hans-Christian Schmid, Sherman Ong, Tsai Ming Liang, Wim Wenders, Haegue Yang and Midi Z, amongst others.

Artists in Conversation
Participating artists: Chen Chieh-jen and Kan Xuan will discuss their artistic practice in moving image with M+ curators Pi Li and Yung Ma. This programme will also include a special presentation by the art collective Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries.
