Muhannad Shono: The Caliph Seeks Asylum

GAM Torino, Via Magenta 31

GAM Torino and La Fondazione Torino Musei on the occasion of Artissima and the new project for the 2019 Hub Middle East edition, which foresees the presence in Turin of the most significant representatives of foundations, museums and galleries together with collectors, critics , curators and artists of the Middle East, presents in the garden of GAM a site-specific installation by the Saudi artist Muhannad Shono (Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, 1977) entitled The Caliph Seeks Asylum.

This is an installation made with 3,500 black PVC pipes arranged as a makeshift camp with the intention of appearing “out of the context of time and space” and the intention to reconstruct Arabic Thought. The tubes have minute decorations that recall the refined ancient illuminated volumes of the Arab-Islamic culture that were destroyed in the Presa of Baghdad.
