Peter Marino: One Way

The Bass

04 Dec 201429 Mar 2015

Peter Marino: One Way explores this renowned American architect and designer’s multi-faceted relationship with art. Peter Marino (b.1973, Florida) has been recognized as a pioneer of cross-disciplinary practice, and for the past four decades has been celebrated for his forward thinking practice at the intersection of art, architecture, fashion, and creative spatial design.

Marino has a longstanding tradition of working closely with artists to commission artworks for his architecture and design. In keeping with that practice, Peter Marino: One Way: features installations by Gregor Hildebrandt, Guy Limone, Farhad Moshiri, Jean-Michel Othoniel and Erwin Wurm. The exhibition begins with Hildebrandt’s Orphische Schatten, (Orphic Shadows), a site specific installation made from hundreds of strips of tape gathered from video cassettes of the Jean Cocteau classic Orphée.

These monochromatic corridors of shimmering tape guide visitors through a selection of remarkable works from Marino‘s personal collection of contemporary art, which include paintings by Loris Gréaud, Keith Haring, Richard Serra, Rudolf Stingel, and Andy Warhol. The Greek myth of Orpheus and his wife Eurydice is skillfully reinterpreted by Hildebrant using the architecture of the museum.

After extensive conversations with the exhibition’s curator Jérôme Sans, the presentation has developed into an exploration of the interplay between Marino‘s designs, his personal collection of contemporary art, his internationally acclaimed architectural designs, and his recently designed series of cast-bronze boxes. The exhibition also includes sections dedicated to Pop art, iconic portraiture, the German spirit, and photography.
