PIPA 2015

PIPA – IP Art Prize arrives at its sixth edition keeping its mission of promoting, stimulating and supporting Brazilian contemporary art. Every year, the four finalists, selected by PIPA’s Nominating Committee, participate in the exhibition of the prize at MAM Rio. 2015 finalists are Cristiano Lenhardt (b. 1975, Itaara, Brazil), Leticia Ramos (b. 1976, Santo Antônio da Patrulha, Brazil), Marina Rheingantz (b. 1983, Araraquara, Brazil) and Virginia de Medeiros (b. 1973, Feira de Santana, Brazil).

Cristiano Lenhardt develops a multiple production in several techniques and media, like drawing, painting, photography, video, installation and collage. Leticia Ramos creates her own photographic devices to capture and reconstruct movement, a research that generates works in video, installation and photography. Painter Marina Rheingantz creates mostly large dimensions works of oil on canvas, with a diverse range of subjects, from landscapes to abstract forms. Virginia de Medeiros, by her turn, uses documentary strategies to go beyond its testimonial character, questioning the limits between reality and fiction.

PIPA – IP Art Prize is a partnership between IP Capital Partners and the MAM Rio, coordinated and sponsored by IP Capital Partners Institute. Its mission is to promote Brazilian artists and MAM Rio, encourage domestic production of contemporary art, support and award emerging artists. There are no entries for the award. All participants are nominated, each year, by the Nominating Committee composed of about 30 different experts in Brazilian contemporary art from all regions of Brazil and abroad, seeking for a comprehensive overview. The Board selects four finalists, having as one of the parameters the number of nominations received. The four finalists receive, each, R$12,000 and show their works in an exhibition at MAM Rio. PIPA 2015 nominees are running for the following prizes: PIPA Prize (total of R$130,000 prize, part of which is used to fund a period of three months in the Residency Unlimited program in New York); PIPA Popular Vote Exhibition (the winner is chosen from among the four finalists by the audience of the exhibition at MAM Rio and receives a R$24,000 prize); PIPA Online (award, given by the Committee, of R$12,000 prize plus a two months residency program at Sacatar Foundation, in Bahia, Brazil, open to all nominees); and PIPA Popular Vote Online (award open to all nominees; the winner is the most voted by the audience in pipa.org.br and pipaprize.com websites and receives a R$6,000 prize).
