Project Room: Beatriz Monteavaro: Nochebuena

Locust Projects, 3852 North Miami Avenue

Cuban-born, Miami-based artist Beatriz Monteavaro will create a new immersive installation in the Project Room based around memories of family gatherings at her childhood home in Miami, with a focus on the celebrations surrounding Noche Buena (Cuban Christmas Eve). The installation will include new sculptural pieces, seasonal decorations, and special lighting alongside elements that represent a continuation of Monteavaro’s recent practice of transforming and reassembling her existing paintings and drawings into collages and shelter-like structures.

Inspired by the sale of the house in which the artist grew up, Monteavaro came across albums containing over thirty years of photographs of family gatherings and celebrations while helping her parents move. Monteavaro’s project both celebrates and mourns the past, in a meditation on continuity and change.
