Putrih Tobias: Compressions

Represented by the gallery for three years now, Tobias Putrih (Slovenia, 1972) presents his first solo show at Luciana Brito Galeria, Compressions [Compressões]. Departing from Rino Levi’s concept of a living room compressed between two layers of tropical garden – also designed by Burle Marx –, screens of corrugated extensible cardboard create semitransparent barriers in the exhibition space. The flexible material is manipulated by the artists with plastic clamps that distort its original structure. One of the show’s installation features 15 canvas of 150 x 106 x 3 cm sustained by coated aluminum frames similar to those found at Luciana Brito Galeria.

Part of the installation can be manipulated by the visitors, who, through the repositioning of the clamps, are able to create new compositions and standards for the cardboard. The show also features a second installation created from stones recovered by the artists in caves around the world. The minerals are shown with variations of Pantone’s scale of gray, which translate the amount of light that the stones have received throughout their existence.

Working with installation, sculpture, drawing and intervention, Tobias Putrih is particularly interest by functional objects, whose everyday nature he reinvents through radical procedures. One of his tactics is to create, for his installations, interventions and objects, “flux situations” and meeting points, redefining the idea of furniture, recreating its meaning and thus broadening the reach of human coexistence and individual perception.

Art Weekend

The opening of the exhibitions is part of the Art Weekend program, that happens on the weekend prior to the inauguration of 32nd São Paulo Biennial. The action is coordinated by Abact’s (Brazilian Association for Contemporary Art) Projeto Latitude – whose current president is Luciana Brito – and aims to create a contemporary art circuit in the city with several simultaneous openings.

During Art Weekend, the gallery remains open on Friday, from 5pm to 10pm, and on Saturday and Sunday, from 12pm to 8pm.
