Rirkrit Tiravanija

Helga Maria Klosterfelde Edition, Potsdamer Straße 97

Rirkrit Tiravanija’s large-scale Mikado (pick-a-stick) relates to the game which is not about points, but about fortunes which are hidden behind the Chinese numbers printed on the 24 sticks. After drawing a stick, the player is entitled to choose a specific fortune printed on paper in one of 24-numbered drawers of a wooden box.

The edition, consisting of 24 custom-made wooden sticks, each 150 cm long, and a wooden box with 24 drawers containing fortunes printed on paper will be published in an edition of 16. On view as well are other editions Tiravanija has made since 1993 including the “bicycle shower”! (2010), which forms a part of “The Land Project” – an agricultural and architecture project in Chiang Mai initiated by Tiravanija with other artists. Also on display are a set of two traditional kites used for competitions throughout Asia – an assemblage of small stones forming the words with the eponymous work “the state of things” (2013), prevents the kites from taking off.

Since the early 1990s, Tiravanija has used exhibition spaces as a platform for social installations such as initiating cooking for the visitors, or having his apartment recreated to scale.
