Robert Kelly: From Here to There

Mercedes Viegas, Rua João Borges, 86 Gávea

For his first solo show in Brazil, Robert Kelly (b. 1956, Santa Fe, USA) presents approximately 20 recently produced works in oil and mixed media on canvas or panel, plus a few drawings.

Robert Kelly’s work sits within the broad tradition of Constructivism. Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich, Constantin Brancuși, Joaquin Torres-Garcia, Alexander Calder, Tony Smith, Ellsworth Kelly, Myron Stout, Kurt Schwitters and Hans Arp are amongst his major influences. On the 1990s, and with an already consolidated artistic career, the artist came across and drew closer to the work of some of most important Brazilian constructivist and neo-concrete artists, notably Sergio Camargo, Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica. Despite having come into contact with them relatively late, their influence has ever since been present in his production.

Kelly has a Bachelor of Arts from Harvard University. He lives and works in New York and has held solo exhibitions in various art centres around the world since 1982. His work is included in the collections of some of the most prestigious museums and cultural institutions in Europe and the United States, among them: The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; The Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn; The Museum of Fine Arts, Santa Fe; The Margulies Collection, Miami; and the McNay Art Museum, San Antonio.
