Simon Evans: Interior Design

For his second solo show in Brazil, Simon Evans (b. 1972, Londres) exhibits new works that reaffirm his unique language, renowned for elaborate collages created with fragments of paper, texts and images. To the obsessive character of his compositions he added elements of a more domestic universe, like images of houses and textile materials.

The use of text, broadly explored in all of his production, gains an oblique presence, opening space for drawing and form. The writings in “Selfish Prayer Rug” seem less interested in forming words than in creating abstract patterns to accompany the surface’s relief (a yoga mat). The artist delineates his body amidst the confusion of letters, like in “Exotic Souls Usual Price”, where his silhouette is surrounded by the leaves of trees he collected in Rio de Janeiro, where he spent the last months, producing the show.

Collecting is an important aspect in Evans’ production, who first attributes meaning to materials of his choice, to rearticulate them later, in free association processes. The work “Repetition of the idea of the form. Materials that deny us Immortality” reflects an obstinate quest for good luck by presents hundreds of four-leaf clovers organized as what could almost be a landscape. In “The World Beats Art”, the largest piece in the show, the artist recreates a carpet he has at home through fragments of photos, drawings and objects that emulate the original pattern. “Door”, by its turn, is elaborated with a thorough weaving process: small strips of paper are braided to form a weft.
