Swiss visual and performance artist Sylvie Fleury explores objects and ideas of cultural desire in the context of abstraction and high minimalism. During Miami Art Week, December 1-6, Fleury presents a variation of her sound and dance performance Camino del Sol, which premiered November 2014 in Paris. The exhibition that follows will feature a video of the performance, its set and related materials.

Sylvie Fleury draws her inspiration from Fluxus performance where simple, repeated actions produce sound. With references to the choreography and artistic happenings of Merce Cunningham and John Cage, the work examines the fusion between visual art, sound and movement, defying the limits between disciplines, while using new technology to explore our relationship to staged settings. Pedestals, stairways, ladders, neon signs and a large projection of a golden escalator from the oldest shopping mall in the U.S., makeup the set. The cast of various female characters (stereotypes?) are fitted with sensors that translate their movements into a surprising range of sounds, which Fleury then manipulates into a live musical composition. The mundane gestures act as reminders of the music and action in our lives that produce our environment. As the sound intensifies, a single dancer appears and overtakes the space. Dualities are present within these attributions of femininity, slightly distorted in each of the characters, as in the music. Drawing us into her universe, Fleury reminds us, with humor and distance, that the world is experienced through force fields and energies.
