The New Human

After two chapters held at Moderna Museet Malmö, the exhibition “The New Human” – curated by Joa Ljungberg – takes over the spaces of the Stockholm venue including works by Adel Abdessemed, Hito Steyerl and Frances Stark.

The exhibition deals with the concept of human condition in the contemporary age, oscillating between the absurd and the serious emergence affecting people all over the world.

“The New Human” consists of a film which collects works made in the 2000s, when the geopolitical change and the terrorist attacks in the US, started to make the society perceive a profound change in humanity. As a result, the present refugee crisis is one of the major example.

The exhibition also makes visitors reflect in terms of global digitalisation, a process which is gradually dissolving the line between real and virtual life.

In this context, a central question is posed: which is the condition of the new human and which is the possible future at these conditions? The artists respond to the question in different manners: Tomas Rafa “Refugees on their way to Western Europe” documents Europe’s handling on the refugee crisis; Hito Steyerl’s ” How not to be seen” gives tool on how to get invisibility in a digital world that is always watching us.
