Thomas Bayrle: One Day on Success Street

The exhibition titled “One Day on Success Street” at ICA, Miami, is the first American retrospective of the German artist Thomas Baryle.

The focus of the show deals with the relationship between technology and humans and how this has changed over the course of his 50 year career. The artist analyses this topic through a variety of artistic languages which include painting, sculpture, video, collage and installation.

Among the 75 works on show, the “Wire Madonna” has been specifically created for ICA Miami Atrium Gallery: this art piece represents the icon of Madonna and Child and it is the biggest sculpture to date by the artist.
The path of the exhibition starts with the artist’s representations of highways which assume the shape of elaborated landscapes. These objects, later in the show, evolve into the representation of urban city life where modern cities seem to fight with masses of pedestrians: the relationship between the city and the human being returns here as one of the main focuses of the artist’s concept. Other artworks reflect Bayrle’s references to consumer culture, media and, commercial icons.
