William Merritt Chase: A painter between New York and Venice

Ca’ Pesaro, Santa Croce 2076, Venice, Italy

Ca’ Pesaro – International Gallery of Modern Art, showcases the first european retrospective of  the American artist William Merritt Chase, entitled “William Merritt Chase: A painter between New York and Venice”, curated by Elsa Smithgall, Erica E. Hirshler, Katherine M. Bourguignon and Giovanna Ginex, under the scientific direction of Gabriella Belli, Dorothy Kosinski and Matthew Teitelbaum.

The famous artist, renowned in art circles between 19th and early 20th centuries, portrayed the life of the north American bourgeoisie with an innovative technique inspired by European ancient and contemporary art masters.

The exhibition features not only some of the most important pieces of his four-decade-long artistic career, but also the unique artwork present in Italy, entitled “Self Portrait (1908)” that comes for this exhibition directly from the Uffizi, in Florence.

Organized with The Phillips Collection Washington DC, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and Terra Foundation for American Art.
With the generous support of  Terra Foundation for American Art.
