Zhao Zhao at Tang Contemporary Art

Tang Contemporary Art, 10/F, H Queen's, 80 Queen's Road, Central, Hong Kong

Tang Contemporary Art presents a major solo exhibition, curated by Cui Cancan, of the contemporary Chinese artist Zhao Zhao, featuring all new works from the artist’s studio. “The works for this Hong Kong exhibition spent a year in production, addressing the theme of security.” said Zhao Zhao. Security is an emotion; a psychological feeling so integral to social structure as an experience of trust and reliability; it is also a physical and psychological premonition of treat and risk, an individual discerning between power and powerless. Exhibiting series “Safety Box”, “Fragments”, “Untitled”, draw on feeling of insecurity and uncertainty in the current state of China.

Zhao Zhao, whose work is often associated with anti-authoritarian or non-conformist tendencies is renowned for confronting existing ideological structures and exercising the power of individual free will in his work. A previous assistant to Ai Weiwei, his provocative, multidisciplinary artistic practice has garnered him international attention in recent years with critically-acclaimed exhibitions across China, North America and Europe as an ‘artist to watch’. His solo exhibition in the Central gallery space will unveil all new multidisciplinary works from the artist’s studio including series Lighter, Fragments, Safe, and Untitled of sculpture, painting and installation, addressing feelings of insecurity and uncertainty in the current state of China.
