The first Gwangju Biennale featured 660 artists from 58 countries, exhibiting over 817 artworks. The theme “Beyond the Borders” conveyed a message of global citizenship that transcended divisions between ideologies, territories, religion, race, culture, humanity, and the arts. Twelve years later, the 12th Gwangju Biennale themed “Imagined Borders” presents two international programmes: the GB Commission and the Pavilion Projects to explore the founding principles of the Biennale: democracy, human rights and peace. Art Sonje Center presents Francis Alÿs’s first ever solo show in Korea. Francis Alÿs consistently directs his distinct poetic and imaginative sensibility toward anthropological and geopolitical concerns centered around observations of, and engagements with, everyday life, which the artist himself has described as “a sort of discursive argument composed of episodes, metaphors, or parables.” One of the key works shown at this exhibition is “Don’t Cross the Bridge Before you get to the River” (2008).
