São Paulo - Fair

SP-Arte 2016

Pavilhão Ciccillo Matarazzo, Biennial Pavilion

09 Apr 201612 Apr 2016

The São Paulo International Art Fair was founded in 2005, it is now the most distinguished art fair in Latin America presenting the top galleries from Brazil and across the globe. Over the span of five days, SP-Arte offers a unique opportunity to interact with artworks, artists, curators, and other professionals from the art world.
The event is enriched by cultural and educational events, including Adriano Pedrosa’s Educational Program [Dialogues and Curatorial Lab] and the Editorial Cluster [with the presence of art magazines, artist’s books publishers, book launches, and an exhibition dedicated to artist’s books].
São Paulo is transformed with special programming taking place in museums, cultural centers, galleries, and special visits to private collections and artist studios.

The 12th edition of SP-Arte kicks off with a VIP/Professional Preview on April 6. It offers an unparalleled opportunity to become immersed in São Paulo’s thriving art scene and explore works by emerging and established artists from the Latin American and international art scene.

Held in the historic Ciccillo Matarazzo Pavilion, designed by Pritzker Laureate Oscar Niemeyer, SP-Arte presents a dynamic mix of renowned art exhibitors and leading art galleries, alternative art practices, a rich cultural program and a talks program with distinguished artists, curators, critics and collectors.

In addition to a new sector that highlights Brazil’s long history of design – focused on authorial pieces in furniture, lighting, and antiques –, the 12th edition of the fair includes a main area that features notable Brazilian galleries such as Dan, Fortes Vilaça, Luisa Strina, Mendes Wood DM, Nara Roesler and Vermelho, as well as high-profile international exhibitors like Continua, Cardi, David Zwirner, kurimanzutto, Lisson, Michael Werner, neugerriemschneider and White Cube.

SP-Arte also presents curated section with cutting-edge programs and artworks that challenge visitors, including the Solo sector, curated by Luiza Teixeira de Freitas; Open Plan, a section dedicated to large works and installations, curated by Jacopo Crivelli Visconti; and the Performance sector, curated by Centro Universitario Belas Artes, a remarkable Brazilian faculty of Fine Arts.

Talks and panel discussions have been organized in collaboration with the Brazilian art magazine, ARTE!Brasileiros, and feature prominent artists, critics, curators, and collectors. Including Mari Carmen Ramírez (Museum of Fine Arts, Houston); Ella Fontanals-Cisneros (CIFO – Cisneros Fontanals Art); and Franklin Sirmans (Pérez Art Museum Miami); and Joan Weinstein (Getty Foundation)

SP-Arte’s gallery program and parallel agenda of events, combined with São Paulo’s vibrant and creative energy, offer a unique moment to experience the city and all it has to offer.

The space in which art develops reflects its target audience and has a direct influence on both the status and the value of the artwork, which intrinsically causes an increase in the appreciation of the artist and induces the consumer to enter a market system based on collectors and producers. But what if this artwork was only one piece of candy? And if the artist was just a seller? How can one establish a relationship with the consumer when he is already accustomed to the art circuit?

There are many things that embody feelings of fear and despair, and a big storm can be one of them. However, storms may present themselves in different ways through out our lives, or not? We never know how or when we will be hit by the next one or if we won’t be hit ever again… So, is it worth it to experience fear? In a wide valley; light, body, sounds, and thunders are mixed among the mental daydreams that psychotic minds can, should or should not have in relation with the pathways that life can overtake and between its dialogues.

A performance that continues with the artist’s research around the possible interactions between the body, the space and its vestiges/memories, in a quest for sensitive approaches towards architecture and equipment. The work of Alexandre D’Angeli seeks new ways of thinking about the intangible vestiges in big cities as a result of human activity; remains of their projects, investments, trade and affections.

“Água Escondida” relies on the power of the images in order to investigate the relationship of cities with its hydrography. Released by EIB Editorial in partnership with the Instituto Moreira Salles, this work brings together an unprecedented series of photomontages and photographs that record underground galleries, ravines, avenues, streams and dams. Images, water and architecture, as well as rural and urban landscape, face, overlap and confuse each other.

The performative action is based on the permanence of the artist with a specific suit for a long period of time. The presence that sustains the work is the expansion of her breath within different dimensions and organic times, turning into an exercise in which the body expands and collapses, reaching extreme limits and alternating in between a large and a small figure. The pauses during the course of time allow the public to have multiple readings of the action and at the same time interfere with the quiet space. The stocky black fabric that serves as a suit, covers the entire body to the point that it merges with an object.

Understood as a dance performance, “A filosofia do Ralo” is a corporal intervention based on the poetic of the novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray” by Oscar Wilde. The performer turns into a figuration of one of the characters of the novel: Basil, whom, in this intervention, walks and dances on different spaces. As the action is performed, the artist carries a scenic object with him created solely for this purpose, a kind of parangolé with sinkers on the back that due to its oppressive weight, gives him a new corporeality.

The performance consists on building an action where the artist, Karen Cruz, holds her hair and divides it by strands, chumbinhos -also known as chumbadas. Chumbinhos are also weights used in fishing, made up, as the name suggests, from metal chumbo, a material that has a considerable weight in relation to its volume and that of other metals. The chumbinhos are attached to strands of hair through out the total extension of the artist’s head by setting the previously fixed lead parts to the hair through the use of elastics. In previous tests, Cruz has used about 4 kg of chumbinhos, seeking to explore the limits of the human body.

Luminous flux. The artist recreates his own body. Reconstructs himself. In the dark his movement leaves a trail of colored lights that blink all over his body as it evolves suspended by an invisible bar. The light that is not proper of his own body, can only be understood as a reflection, an “incorporation” present in “Lúmen”. Through artificial mechanisms, the artist presents a body that expells light, as his living presence is recorded in the darkened space of the performance.

The performance presents to the public the image of a male body subjugated by and object: a tall orange shoe with a 30 centimeters stake heel. Unable to stand up and hold an erect, masculine and dominant position, the artist’s body moves slowly along the horizontal plane through a choreography that condenses images related to the objectification of women. Starting from the transformation of the shoe and its placement in a male body, the work raises questions regarding gender identity and the role of specific objects in the process.

The performance is built based on the idea of mental weight, where there is no consciousness of the acts themselves. With a strong belief in the existing connection between mind and body, the artist carries the thought that any issues in the mind will affect the body if not resolved, and vice versa, as corporal issues may also have an influence on the mind.
