Title: “Music for Everyone: Variations on a Theme”
Curator: Michelle Ho
Commissioner: National Arts Council Singapore
Artist: Song-Ming Ang
The project by artist Song-Ming Ang draws inspiration from a series of concerts titled “Music for Everyone”, organised in the 1970s by then-Ministry of Culture of Singapore, to promote Western classical music education and to foster a sense of national identity. The work represents a counter-point to national and prescribed forms of music, presenting on the other hand experimental musical interventions. The artist shows how such manifestations of art could exist in a playful dimension and can be created by anyone starting from simple ideas and techniques.
