The Republic of Yemen will be represented for the first time at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, Italy.
The Yemeni participation in Venice coincides with a difficult period for the country which is facing a tragic political crisis that also implicated the destruction of architectural heritage sites.
The title of the 15th International Architecture Exhibition “REPORTING FROM THE FRONT” is particularly applicable to the Yemen pavilion. The Ministry of Culture of Yemen hopes that a shared concern for the preservation of heritage will contribute to the peace building process. Attending for the first time La Biennale di Venezia, Beautiful Yemen team has conceived a Pavillion whose core objective is to depict the strong boundary between Yemeni cultural heritage and Yemeni national identity, taking vernacular architecture as example. The promotion and the transmission of traditional building techniques has been proven vital for the preservation of the authenticity and the charm of Yemen’s historic centers. This will be even more urgent during the post-war period, since these operation are worthwhile both for the safeguarding of the architectural heritage and for the generation of sustainable microeconomic systems that will create new revival opportunities in a context deeply affected by poverty and unemployment.
