The cultural metropolis Basel has a lot to offer. The city is part of the forefront of European visual arts, architecture and design and is home to an astonishing variety of cultural institutions: around 40 museums, including world-famous ones such as Kunstmuseum Basel, which houses one of Europe’s largest as well as one of its first public art collections or Fondation Beyeler in Riehen near Basel, the most-visited art museum in Switzerland and the Theater Basel – Switzerland’s largest multipurpose theatre – a musical theatre and numerous smaller theatres, as well as sev-eral galleries and cinemas.
The city is home to the world’s largest art fair, Art Basel, which enjoys a global reputation as the largest and most important modern and contemporary art fair. The art fair came into being in 1970 and is also represented in Miami Beach and Hong Kong. There is also a unique density of masterpieces of contemporary architecture that attract visitors from all over the world. Global architects such as Herzog & de Meuron, Renzo Piano, Zaha Hadid, Richard Meier and many more have made their mark in Basel.
