Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation (DBF) Presents First Edition of Majhi International Art Residency Programme in Venice

Presented by Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation (DBF) and curated by Caterina Corni, the first edition of Majhi International Art Residency Programme will run from 20 July to 11 August, 2019 in Venice .

Organised in collaboration with Lightbox, Majhi takes places at Combo, the former Convento dei Crociferi, just few steps away from the Venetian city centre. Here the artists will live and work from July 20th to August 3rd, to produce a collective exhibition opening on August 3rd, 2019. The exhibition will remain open to the public from August 4 –11, 2019 in the same location and a catalogue will be produced by the curator in collaboration with cataloguer and recorder Laura Amman.

The artists – Dilara Begum Jolly, Dhali Al-Mamoon, Rajaul Islam (Lovelu), Noor Ahmed Gelal, Uttam Kumar Karmaker and Kamruzzaman Shadhin, Umut Yasat, Chiara Tubia, Cosima Montavoci, Andrea Morucchio, David Dalla Venezia – come from different regions of the world: six of them are born in Bangladesh, another one’s cultural roots divide between Turkey and Germany while four are Venetians. Over their stay, the artists are invited to reflect upon the open question “Does life in these uncertain times of crisis and turmoil, make art more interesting?” inspired by the title of the 58th International Art Exhibition – La Biennale di Venezia, curated by Ralph Rugoff “May You Live in Interesting Times”. As a result of their work, they will also choose a title for their exhibition.

The Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation was established in 2018 to promote art and artists from South Asia and beyond. DBF supports artists in creating new artworks and to engage art practitioners in relevant exhibitions, publications and residencies. Having offices in Berlin and Dhaka, DBF offers a conduit to connect art and artists between Asia, Europe and beyond.
