The Ruya Foundation has announced that the Belgian-born artist Francis Alÿs will have a special project for the Iraq Pavilion at the upcoming Venice Biennale 2017.
Alÿs’s special commission will be a project on the particular and delicate subject of war, experienced by the artist in his recent trip to Iraq, where he was involved into the Mosul front. Under the title of “Archaic”, the Iraqui Pavilion will showcase works by eight modern and contemporary Iraqi artists, set in close dialogue with the ancient artifacts. The exhibition will include works by the Baghdad-based artist Luay Fadhil, Sulaymaniya-based artists Sherko Abbas and Sakar Sleman, Khanaquin-based artist Ali Arkady, Baghdad–born artists Sadik Kwaish Alfraji and Nadine Httom, and the renowned Iraqi modern artists Jawad Salim and Shaker Hassan Al Said.
“Archaic” will be co-curated by Tamara Chalabi, Chair and Co Founder of The Ruya Foundation, and by Paolo Colombo, Art Adviser at the Istanbul Museum of Modern Art.
