Gallery Weekend Berlin

An established entry on the international art calendar, Gallery Weekend Berlin presents the work of emerging and established artists in conjunction with 54 Berlin galleries taking place from April 29 – May 1, 2016.

Initiated and organized twelve years ago by a small group of Berlin galleries, Gallery Weekend Berlin was founded for galleries in order to draw attention to the gallery space as a site enabling artists to develop their art, while also highlighting the city of Berlin, with its high density of artists and gallerists living and working here.
With its unique interplay of an intense engagement with art, its status as an anticipated social event, and the experience of the city itself, Gallery Weekend Berlin remains unparalleled despite efforts to duplicate it. Berlin galleries are distinguished by their reputation — closely interconnected with Berlin history — for presenting exhibitions that choose to privilege the artist over more commercial aspects. One has been able to experience exhibitions presented by Berlin galleries over the last 20 years that could only have been conceivable in institutions elsewhere. Many of the artists represented by Berlin galleries currently live in Berlin or have done so in the past, growing in close connection to and with their galleries.

For artists, Berlin offered affordable studios and production, and for gallerists: the corresponding exhibition, office and storage space. Berlin has always been a city of upheaval, with its collapsed histories of differing political orientations and their diverse, yet unfulfilled, conceptions of the city. Berlin’s continuous transformation facilitated open spaces from which sprung an art scene that was experimental, crossed genres, and freed itself from conventions. An understanding of the ‘gallery’ emerged that prompted exhibitions in spaces that redefined the very term.
The past 20 years have seen continuous change in Berlin and its art scene; not all is still new, and much has proven itself with the test of time. The city boasts a curiosity that remains a driving force in preventing Berlin from ever being ‘finished’.
