The prize is awarded annually by the Centre Pompidou in Paris and the Association pour la Diffusion Internationale de l’Art Français to a French artist. This year’s other nominees were Yto Barrada, Ulla von Brandenburg, and Barthélémy Toguo.
Kader Attia will be awarded the €35,000 prize but will not be given a solo show at the Pompidou, though his work is currently on view in an exhibition of all the prize’s 2016 nominees at the museum.
This week the artist has also opened La Colonie, an independent art space which will host workshops, conferences, lectures, and readings but details of the exhibition schedule are yet to be announced. Attia has emphasized that La Colonie is an independent project and receives no state subsidy.
