My Art Guide Dubai/Sharjah/Abu Dhabi is a paper and digital issue dedicated to the art week in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, running from March 19th to 25th 2018, available online and on iOS app.
This edition has been developed thanks to an incredible editorial committee formed by Majed Al Hashly (Head of Communication at Louvre Abu Dhabi), Manal Ataya (Director General of the Sharjah Museums Authority) and Vilma Jurkute (Director at Alserkal Avenue).
The committee has been working to select the best and most interesting art spaces and exhibitions in town as well as the coolest restaurants and hotels.
Majed Al Hashly has worked in the communications field for the past 7 years. He graduated from Royal Holloway University in the UK with a BSc in Management and studied Global Media and Post-national Communications in SOAS. He has worked in the Crown Prince Court, the General Secretariat of the Executive Council of Abu Dhabi, Sky News Arabia and Sky News UK. He is also a digital artist and a filmmaker that has previously exhibited in Abu Dhabi Art. Currently, he works in Louvre Abu Dhabi as the Communications Unit Head.
Manal Ataya is a museum specialist with 12 years experience in cultural heritage preservation, museum development and cultural diplomacy. As Director General of the Sharjah Museums Authority she is responsible for the overall management of 16 museums in the emirate of Sharjah. The authority is responsible for the strategic development of future museum projects, fostering partnerships with the international museum community and leading the efforts to deliver international best practice in museum services. The current museum offering covers Islamic culture and history, contemporary art, heritage, maritime history, archaeology, science and children’s learning. Manal Ataya holds a BA in Studio Art and Communication Studies from Hamilton College and a Graduate Degree in Museum Studies from Harvard University, USA. She is a Clore Fellow having completed the distinguished UK cultural leadership program in 2010.
She currently serves on the advisory boards of the College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences-University of Sharjah and ICCROM-ATHAR, the regional center for cultural heritage preservation in the Arab region. She also serves as a member of the Supreme Committee for the File of Sharjah – the Trucial States Portal.
Vilma Jurkute is Director at Alserkal Avenue. With a degree in International Business from Grenoble Graduate School of Business, Vilma has spent the last decade developing creative industries across New York, Chicago, London and Dubai. She joined Alserkal Avenue in 2011 and in her time with the organisation, she has been instrumental in its evolution and responsible for overseeing the Avenue’s physical expansion in 2015 as well as the inauguration of Concrete in 2017. Vilma also launched Alserkal Programming in 2015, and Alserkal Residency in 2017, affirming the organisation’s commitment to the development of arts and culture in the region. She has been a vocal supporter of growing a creative economy, and a strong advocate for its importance in social development and identity within the MENASA region. Vilma serves on the advisory boards of the Global Cultural Districts Network and the Jean-Paul Najar Foundation. Vilma is currently pursuing an Executive MSc in Sustainable Urban Development at the University of Oxford, UK.
