The inauguration of the new Kunstmuseum Basel will bring several innovations

In mid-April 2016, the enlarged Kunstmuseum Basel will open its doors to the public. In the future, the museum will present art at three venues: the main building, the new extension by Christ & Gantenbein architects, and the gallery building formerly known as Museum für Gegenwartskunst.

As part of the museum’s strategic reorientation, it will be renamed Kunstmuseum Basel | Gegenwart; similarly, the other two venues will be known as Kunstmuseum Basel | main building and Kunstmuseum Basel | new building. The rebranding will strengthen the Kunstmuseum Basel’s identity and emphasize the institutional affiliation of the three venues.

Visitors to the Kunstmuseum’s three venues can look forward to an exciting program of exhibitions. To celebrate the inauguration, the Museum will present the grand special exhibition Sculpture on the Move 1946–2016, which will turn the focus on art in the medium of sculpture between the end of World War II and the present. Concurrently, the exhibition Barnett Newman –Drawings and Prints will be on view in the galleries of the Kupferstichkabinett. In the fall, the year’s second grand special exhibition will bring together numerous works on loan from collections around the world to survey the figurative oeuvre of Jackson Pollock.
