Porta Posnania

The remarkable Porta Posnania symbolically connects Poznań’s oldest districts of Cathedral Island and Śródka.

ul. Gdańska 2

Porta Posnania tells a story of the Cathedral Island using various multimedia and interactive presentations. The history spans over a period of more than a millennium. It is located in the oldest part of Poznan where the Warta and the Cybina rivers cross. Porta Posnania design consists of the main, modernist style building and the restored Cathedral Lock, which was once a part of Prussian fortifications system.
Porta Posnania is not a museum, there are no artifacts here. All artifacts and historical places are on the Cathedral Island. After learning about the Island’s history the visitors can venture out to see the historical spots themselves.
Visitors are led by audioguides. They can choose from three different tours : individual tour, family tour and a group tour.
Up till very recently, the cultural heritage of the Cathedral Island has been very little known. Not many visitors are aware that in the 10th century it was the site of the most powerful fortified settlement established by Poland’s first know ruler, Duke Mieszko I. It is thus the cradle of the Polish state.
The primary purpose of Porta Posnania is to familiarize visitors with its history and significance, but what is more important, to inspire to explore the Island and to get an up close look at its historic sights.
