Crude: Oil as Archive, Infrastructure and Technology

Jameel Arts Centre, Jameel Arts Centre, Jaddaf Waterfront, Dubai, UAE

The exhibition groups 17 artists and collectives which investigate the topic of oil, considered as an agent of social, cultural and economic events. Oil, in fact, has been the triggering factor of colonial adventures, wars, geo-political upheavals as well as the cause, at the same time, of modernisation processes and ecological disasters. “Crude: Oil as Archive, Infrastructure and Technology” features works by different artists who drew inspiration from archival and historical documentation related with oil, owned by various national, corporate and media archives. Their pieces seek to reconstruct a historical narration related with oil and to reflect on the specific improvements that this material has introduced, also describing its resulting sociological, cultural and environmental effects across the region.
