Paulo Pasta: Há um fora dentro da gente e fora da gente um dentro

Galeria Millan, Rua Fradique Coutinho, 1360, Pinheiros

Paulo Pasta’s (b. 1959, Ariranha, Brazil) first solo show in the city since 2012 marks the opening of Galeria Millan’s new space, the Anexo Millan, located just a few meters away from the original gallery. The exhibition is titled after a verse by Minas Gerais born poet Francisco Alvim, Há um fora dentro da gente e fora da gente um dentro [There’s An Outside Inside Of Us And Outside Of Us An Inside], and occupies both of the gallery’s spaces with hitherto unseen works created during the last three years, including his reencounter with the landscape genre.

The show creates an intersection between two different set of works apparently very different from one another, but with important points of convergence. On the one hand there are the landscapes, reintegrated to the painter’s repertoire after decades of absence; on the other, abstract canvases, marked by an intense and ambiguous chromatic atmosphere and refined geometrical structures that are responsible for his protagonism on contemporary Brazilian painting. Both are originated from the same interest in the pictorial craft, in the reinvention of the world, and in the encounter between experience and intuition.

At Millan’s traditional space the visitor will find paintings on canvas of different dimensions that are part of Pasta’s long term research looking for a subtle and rigorous balance between form and colour. Yet, with them, there will be one of the landscapes recently produced by the artist, who works with the memory of the surroundings of his hometown, in the state of São Paulo. Similarly, Anexo Millan will be dedicated to the landscapes, which will coexist with only one large dimensions abstract canvas.

With the exhibition, the gallery will launch Fábula da Paisagem [Landscape Fable], an object-book measuring 25 cm x 20 cm with around 25 of the landscapes created by the artist. The art critic and PhD in literature Samuel Titan Jr. signs the edition and the presentation text.
